Randall Brown, MD MPH AE-C

Dr. Randall Brown is director of asthma and COPD programs at the University of Michigan’s Center for Managing Chronic Disease, and for over 10 years has maintained professorships in Health Behavior and Health Education at the University’s School of Public Health.

Dr. Brown received B.A. and M.D. degrees from the University of Michigan, and received his Master of Public Health degree from Harvard University. He conducted a Pediatrics residency at Boston University, and clinical fellowship in Pediatric Pulmonology at The Children’s Hospital in Boston and Harvard Medical School. He also completed a Respiratory Epidemiology research fellowship at Harvard’s Channing Laboratory. Dr. Brown has received medical board certification in both General Pediatrics and Pediatric Pulmonology.

Dr. Brown is principal investigator for three large national asthma research grants that explore the translation of effective asthma educational models at all levels of clinical practice and how they affect individuals and families most at risk. Having previously served as research director for the largest clinical pediatric pulmonology practice in the US, he is extensively published in allergy, ENT, pulmonology, family medicine, pediatric and public health journals and has received numerous clinical and teaching honors--including the inaugural 2007 AAOA Fellowship Award for novel asthma education.

Notably, his first-authored work in JACI (2012) represents the largest study of asthma therapeutics among African Americans ever conducted.

Dr. Brown is a member of the first international Respiratory Effectiveness Group--a panel devoted to incorporating rigorous understanding of adherence and other real-world measures into the science of evidence-based decision models for asthma and COPD.

The award-winning asthma education program for medical professionals, PACE, of which Dr. Brown is director and co-author, is accepted nationally and internationally (US, UK and Australia) by numerous asthma and COPD projects as the model for clinician respiratory education efforts—PACE is highlighted on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) asthma website. Lastly, as one of few US pulmonologists also recognized as a nationally certified asthma educator (AE-C), Dr. Brown serves on the board of directors of the National Asthma Educator Certification Board (2013 – 2016) and the Allergy and Asthma Network (2016).
